Clinical Consultation Breakfast 5 (sold out)
School Consultation: Special Education and School Mental Health Programs
Child and adolescent psychiatrists who do school consultation frequently work with special education programs or, increasingly, school mental health programs. This CCB provides an opportunity to discuss clinical and practical issues related to school consultation with two well-established experts in the school setting. A forum for open, candid discussion, this breakfast focuses on two significant topics: the special education student and the challenges they present, and the needs of school-based mental health centers. Based on clinical work and research, the characteristics of the special education student, including psychiatric diagnosis, cognitive/achievement profiles, and family stresses are presented, as well as how to work with school staff and administrators to improve special education programs in their schools. The important steps in the development of school mental health and school-based mental health centers are outlined. Models of screening in schools, telehealth services and consultation to rural communities, implementing a public health approach to children’s mental health through school system, and effective communication with schools are presented.
