Clinical Case Conference 4 (open)
The Role of "Cognitive Rigidity" in the Diagnosis, Course, and Treatment of Pediatric Psychiatric Disorders
This Clinical Case Conference focuses on children with various neuropsychiatric disorders with symptoms of “cognitive rigidity” and related symptoms, such as irritability, emotional regulation, speech and language skills, and parental characteristics (and styles). It discusses the variability of “cognitive rigidity” in various childhood psychiatric disorders, and illustrates the role of this factor in the development of symptoms, as well as impairment in the case vignettes presented. This presentation proposes the need for research to investigate this concept: how it is expressed in various disorders, its course, its interaction with parental factors (such as genetics as well as communication/interactive variables), emotional regulation, as well as language/communication development. This Clinical Case Conference reviews several child case vignettes (with different psychiatric diagnoses) to address the concept of “cognitive rigidity” from various perspectives.
