Increasing Recruitment Into Child and Adolescent Psychiatry: A 10-Year Update From the Steering Committee on Workforce Issues
Evidence points to an increase in the prevalence of mental health problems among children, adolescents, and young adults. Up to 20% of youth in the United States, or 15 million children, will suffer from a major mental disorder by the age of 18 years, and half of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin to exhibit symptoms by age 14, while 75% begin by age 24. Child and adolescent psychiatrists, the physicians trained specifically to work with affected youth, represent the most underserved of all medical subspecialists, according to the United States Federal Bureau of Health Professions. Over the past 12 years, AACAP has taken clear strides to address the dearth of child and adolescent psychiatrists. The goal of this presentation is to describe efforts to date and to discuss plans for efforts going forward.
