Workshop 3 (sold out)
The ABCs of ABA and Related Techniques for Autism Intervention: Demonstration and Didactics
Finding successful interventions for children with autism and related disorders can be daunting for both parents and professionals. Child and adolescent psychiatrists are often central in making the initial diagnosis, suggesting referrals, and providing families with direction and support. Finding appropriate interventions is key for optimal development. Some of the most common and proven interventions are those based on applied behavior analysis (ABA), relational skills, life skills, and communication skills (speech therapy and assisted communication). This Workshop provides exposure to ABA and related interventions, and conveys useful information as to why these interventions are effective. Clinical and research knowledge about how to choose the best interventions for each patient are discussed; and a brief overview of resource availability and physician/parent advocacy is given.
