"A Hidden America: Children of the Mountains"
Diane Sawyer's report on Appalachian poverty, “A Hidden America: Children of the Mountains,” opens a window on the lives of children and adolescents that the child and adolescent psychiatrists of this region serve. The challenges, burdens, and rewards of this work are little shared or understood by the majority of their colleagues across the country. This presentation highlights the everyday challenges of working with this invisible population. Like a classic movie, the editing of this work shows us critical elements of four children's lives. Violence and death are a constant motif. When Sawyer’s report was originally aired in February 2009, it was seen by 10.9 million viewers, and caused a fire storm in the Lexington, KY Herald Leader, where locals felt that Sawyer (a native of Louisville) had sold them out. But to the approximately sixty child and adolescent psychiatrists of the Commonwealth, her report rings true in drawing a spotlight to the abuse, substance use, and depression that is all to common in the lives of the children of this region.
