The New Kids in America: Immigrant Children
Join a full-day tour of the world of the immigrant child in the United States. With the rapidly changing demographic of the United States, the country is experiencing the largest wave of child immigration in its history. While there have been advances in cross-cultural diagnosis and efforts to bring evidence-based treatment to immigrant children, they face unique challenges of language and cultural views of psychiatric disorders and syndromes. The mental health issues facing this growing population of children should be an increasing area of concern and focus for the child and adolescent psychiatrist because as this population grows the demographic of their practice may shift dramatically. Your tour guides review a wide range of relevant information from anthropology and cultural psychology, clinical/school/development psychology, language acquisition, developmental psychopathology, developmental epidemiology, and related clinical trials. Today’s child and adolescent psychiatrist benefits greatly from an increased interdisciplinary understanding of the world of immigrant children, enabling them to better serve this growing population.
