Management of Somatization in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry
Somatizing disorders present frequent challenges to child and adolescent psychiatrists with regard to diagnosis and treatment. This Workshop reviews current clinical perspectives on the differential diagnosis and treatment/management of somatoform disorders, factitious disorders, and malingering. Relevant DSM-IV-TR diagnostic criteria for each of these categories is reviewed and video illustrations are used where possible to aid in the learning process. Presentations cover available treatment modalities, together with adjustments needed based on the age, intellectual capacities, and educational levels of the patient and family members. Treatment strategies for patients with somatoform disorders are presented, including psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, hypnosis, pharmacotherapy, and adjunctive use of physical therapy. Specific examples in interface with cardiology, neurology, and pain disorders are addressed.
