Clinical Consultation Breakfast 3 (ticket)
Culturally Informed Child Psychiatric Practice
Child and adolescent psychiatrists in the United States are treating an increasing number of non-European, ethnically, racially, and culturally diverse children and youth. Since most of our science is based on Western cultural concepts, there are numerous cultural considerations around effective diagnosis, formulation, and treatment selection and adherence that need to be addressed in order to avoid disparities around child mental health services. This CCB affords the child and adolescent psychiatrists an opportunity to obtain consultation around the cultural needs of their patients, both from experienced colleagues and peers. The breakfast uses case presentations by the participants and the consultants to illustrate critical areas (clinical assessment, developmental and functional assessment, youth and family engagement, treatment selection, transference and counter-transference concerns, and modifications of evidence-based treatments) where culturally informed practice can lead to improved outcomes. A relaxed, non-judgmental and collegial atmosphere is established to allow for the most open and frank discussion possible.
