Mental Health and Substance Abuse in the Medical Home as It Pertains to Rural Settings
The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) supports a broad range of services to underserved populations from a perspective that recognizes the unique needs of these diverse communities, promotes the development of a strong and compassionate workforce to serve these communities, and catalyzes multi-sectoral, transdisciplinary partnerships at the individual, team, healthcare system, and community level. The Medical Home Model promotes such objectives.

Underserved pediatric populations are at high-risk for a broad range of behavioral issues and it is critical that these needs are addressed. It is also important that a culturally competent, diverse primary care/public health workforce that recognizes these issues and includes behavioral health specialists as fundamental members of the transdisciplinary team. The diversity of this workforce is essential to address the unique, often unremitting challenges in underserved communities where creativity is needed to reframe these challenges into opportunities.
