Functional Family Therapy in Forensic Child and Adolescent Psychiatry: The Dutch Experience
Functional Family Therapy (FFT) combines social learning and family systems approaches in the treatment of disruptive behavior disorders and delinquency. The three stages and different communication techniques used in FFT are explained and the role of the child and adolescent psychiatrist in a FFT team is evaluated. Special attention is given to cannabis addiction, the role of cultural background, the increase of female juvenile delinquents, and the role of mental retardation in juvenile crime. A new program for the treatment of juvenile delinquents that includes a high level of outreach is previewed and discussed.
