Workshop 34 (ticket)
Strength-Based, Culturally Adapted Approaches to Depression and Related Challenges

Western psychiatric approaches to mental health promotion and mental illness treatment may not be effective in and acceptable to other cultures, particularly in communities with traumatic histories that currently experience oppression. Processes for collaboratively adapting such interventions are poorly understood, yet may prevent unintended harm while making available the benefits of such approaches. Participants of this Workshop identify challenges and lessons learned about processes for cross-cultural adaptation of preventive mental health interventions in community-based early education settings. Participants also describe salient attributes of two innovative approaches: Family Connections and Touchpoints.
