Workshop 6 (ticket)
Delivering Culturally Competent Mental Health Services to Latinos in an Academic Setting

With the continued growth of Latino populations in the United States, cultural competence for mental health providers of children and families is essential. Latinos are an at risk population with significant unmet needs for mental health services. Health service research reveals that linguistically and culturally competent services may increase accessibility and utilization of services, as well as improve mental health outcomes. This Workshop helps attendees understand the barriers Latinos face in obtaining mental health services, common treatment challenges, including issues of ethno-psychopharmacology, issues related to use of interpreters, and the role of a community psychiatry training track in improving accessibility to culturally competent services for Latinos.
