Workshop 30 (ticket)
The Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and the School System: Understanding U.S. Public School Law

A significant number of child and adolescent psychiatry patients have special needs in the school setting. Their access to appropriate services is guided by public school law. A sufficient understanding of the history of public school law and the existing legal framework for special needs students is necessary for the child and adolescent psychiatrist to comfortably and effectively collaborate with school officials and advocate for their patients. This Workshop provides a clear understanding of existing law and, also, looks at the challenges faced by teachers and school administrators. Child and adolescent psychiatrists must understand the distinction between legal eligibility for services and the clinical needs of their patients if they are to work effectively within the educational system. Relevant issues surrounding the renewal of No Child Left Behind are also discussed.
