Prevention of Bullying-Related Morbidity

There is increasing evidence that bullying is a very injurious form of maltreatment, prevalent across different social settings, along the lifespan, and on a global scale. Children and adolescents who participate in bullying as bystanders, victims, and/or perpetrators have a high risk of mental health problems, including suicidal attempts, frequent depression, irritability, anxiety, insomnia, nightmares, headaches or stomachaches, obesity, and alcohol and drug abuse. To effectively contribute to bullying prevention, intervention, and treatment, child and adolescent psychiatrists need to understand the nature and socio-ecological aspects of bullying. This Institute enables clinicians to better recognize this type of abuse and presents interventions to reduce related medical and psychiatric problems. It also relates the efficacy of available research-based bullying prevention programs and how to facilitate their implementation, emphasizing the need for coordinated efforts between health professionals and policy makers.
