Workshop 1 (sold out)
Engaging Affectively Unstable Adolescents in Treatment: A Mentalizing Approach

Mentalizing-based treatment (MBT) is a therapeutic intervention for adolescents that focuses on promoting the adolescent’s capacity to mentalize in emotionally charged situations and relationships; and, in particular, to help the family shift from coercive impasses to mentalizing interactions that support effective communication and problem solving. MBT resolves crises and impasses by shifting non-mentalizing interaction to mentalizing interaction and providing a systematic approach for adolescents and families to practice mentalizing. This Workshop offers hands-on experience with the MBT approach. After discussion of the mentalizing framework and how to assess mentalizing strengths and impairments, participants break into small groups to practice assessing, developing a formulation, and adopting a mentalizing treatment approach to a clinical case.
