Workshop 21 (sold out)
Children, Adolescents, and Electronics: Clinical Challenges for the Multidisciplinary Team

This workshop explores the increasing influence of electronics in child and adolescent development, bringing change within social, family, and academic domains. Youth average greater than seven hours per day using various types of electronic media, e.g., television, DVDs, gaming, social networking, Internet, and cell phones. Child and adolescent psychiatrists encounter the constantly changing cyber world daily in their assessment and treatment of youth. An overview of electronics and the transformation of the cell phone from a communication tool to a relationship tool are discussed. Through a series of vignettes, participants explore electronic usage patterns that contribute to insomnia, depression, anxiety, mood instability, social withdrawal, declining academic performance, and family conflict. Participants learn intake, assessment, and treatment tools to address behavioral problems associated with electronic media usage.
