Phoebe In Wonderland: A Look Into the World of Tourette's Disorder

The movie Phoebe in Wonderland provides insight that helps mental health treatment providers better understand the challenges that children with Tourette’s Disorder face and the impact the disorder has on family dynamics. The film won the “Most Touching Movie” award at the Sundance Film Festival in 2008. The film follows Phoebe, a 9-year-old girl, as she struggles with the challenges of her tics, obsessions, and rituals; both at school and at home. One sees how the stigma of having a mental illness, and the subsequent negative attention, affects a child’s sense of self worth and self-esteem. Also, media portrayals of mental illness and how they may affect the patient-doctor relationship are discussed.
