Workshop 29 (sold out)
Prevention and Reduction of Aggression, Seclusion, and Restraint

Restraint and seclusion are utilized in some child and adolescent programs such as inpatient psychiatric units, residential programs, schools, and juvenile justice settings as means of managing aggressive behavior. While few would describe these interventions as desirable and most would welcome not prescribing them, some clinicians and staff see restraint and seclusion as necessary for the management of aggression. This Workshop enables participants to learn more about the development of successful restraint prevention initiatives, as well as the many challenges encountered in this pursuit. The concept of reducing coercion in milieu management and treatment delivery are introduced and discussed in detail. Actual cases provide a springboard for small group and open discussion; facilitating not only the development of strategies in program development and work with individual patients, but the development of a peer support system.
