Clinical Consultation Breakfast 14 (ticket)
Culturally Informed Child Psychiatric Practice

American child and adolescent psychiatrists are treating an increasing number of non-European ethnically, racially, and culturally diverse children and youth. Since most of the science is based on Western cultural concepts, there are numerous cultural considerations around effective diagnosis, formulation, and treatment selection and adherence that need to be addressed in order to avoid disparities in mental health services for these children. Cultural consultation in the psychiatric diagnosis and treatment of diverse patients is a practice that is highly recommended by established guidelines and has led to improvement in quality of care and outcomes for many provider organizations and state mental health systems. This CCB allows child and adolescent psychiatrists the opportunity to present cases from their practice that involve culturally diverse children and obtain consultation from colleagues and peers with regard to the cultural needs of the patient. Areas stressed are clinical assessment, developmental and functional assessment, youth and family engagement, treatment selection, transference and counter-transference, and modifications of evidence-based treatments.
