Clinical Case Conference 5 (open)
Two Cases of Culturally Modified Family Therapy for Latina Adolescents with Anorexia Nervosa

This Clinical Case Conference demonstrates how an evidence-based, family-based treatment (FBT) for anorexia nervosa was modified to work successfully with Latino families. Eating disorders are rising more rapidly in prevalence among cultural minority groups in the United States than among other populations. Culturally informed treatment for eating disorders in this population, particularly family therapy, is critical. Two cases outlining the successful treatment of Latina adolescent girls are presented; familiarizing participants with the goals and strategies in FBT, identifying cultural factors that may come into play, and demonstrating how a clinician’s own cultural biases can affect treatment.
