Workshop 31 (ticket)
Collaboration with Primary Care: Developing Clinical Skills, Overcoming System Challenges

Primary care pediatricians, family physicians, and nurse practitioners are increasingly involved in the assessment and treatment of children and adolescents with mental health problems. The child and adolescent psychiatrist’s evolving role in these contexts is to serve as consultant and mentor to other health care providers. With adequate awareness of barriers and careful planning, collaborative models are feasible, sustainable, clinically valuable, and professionally satisfying. This Workshop presents several clinical delivery systems within which child and adolescent psychiatrists work collaboratively with primary care providers in order to improve access to care for children. Participants receive an overview of various models of child and adolescent psychiatry practice offered in collaboration with primary care. Clinical, interpersonal, and administrative skills necessary for a successful program are covered. Participants are prepared to function effectively in collaborative primary care settings, as well as to contribute to the development and implementation of such programs.
