Workshop 17 (ticket)
Culturally Informed Practice: Intermediate Skills

Child and adolescent psychiatrists in the United States are treating an increasing number of non-European, ethnically, racially, and culturally diverse children and adolescents. Child and adolescent psychiatrists benefit from more intensive training on culturally informed practice, based on sound conceptual models and clinical case evidence. Participants learn to better recognize cultural stereotypes and cognitive shortcuts that may interfere with their assessment and treatment of this diverse population. Covered are key cultural issues in diagnostic assessment of diverse children and adolescents; the use of cultural formulations to inform assessment and treatment needs; and ways to adapt therapeutic approaches to improve engagement and effectiveness of treatment with diverse patients and their families. In addition, participants have the opportunity to discuss cases from their practices.
