The King’s Speech: And How We Manage Our Patients Today

The King’s Speech goes beyond simply depicting speech therapist Lionel Logue’s successful treatment of King George IV of England. It stands for two much larger ideas: adult pathology often has childhood origins; and treatment should emphasize such factors as a strong therapeutic alliance, practice at new behaviors, familial cooperation, knowledge of others with this problem, and play or fun in therapy. The movie is used as a backdrop for the discussion of current therapy for stammering and stuttering, what childhood psychopathology may follow from speech problems, and how the King’s film therapy resembles 21st century play therapy.
