Workshop 8 (ticket)
Improving Training in Forensic Psychiatry for Children and Adolescents

There are unique challenges and approaches that come with working in the forensic setting. Child and adolescent psychiatrists are in a unique position: they have the developmental training to aid in the initial evaluation of children and adolescents in the legal system, and the ability to be of assistance in obtaining a more comprehensive assessment. However, to be effective, they need to be proficient in their understanding of the legal system. This Workshop reviews the interactions between child and adolescent psychiatry and forensic psychiatry, especially as they pertain to training; examines approaches to improving the forensic experience for those in child and adolescent psychiatry training; and identifies the benefits and challenges that come with trying to develop an inclusive program at an academic center. Participants learn about a number of possible interventions to improve the knowledge base and competency in forensics as it pertains to child and adolescent psychiatry training.
