Workshop 35 (ticket)
“Medical Clearance” of Pediatric Patients with New Psychiatric Symptoms

This Workshop reviews the topic of “medical clearance” of patients presenting with new psychiatric symptoms from the perspectives of emergency medicine, pediatrics, and psychiatry. The purpose of medical clearance is to establish if psychiatric symptoms are due to a medical illness or are substance related, and to assess and treat a medical illness requiring acute intervention. Pediatricians and emergency room physicians want assistance in diagnosing primary psychiatric illness in order to avoid unnecessary investigations and expedite psychiatric intervention. Participants learn to discuss potential investigations that may be required for patients presenting with new psychiatric symptoms and the rational for such investigations; to generate a differential diagnosis of medical conditions that might present with new psychiatric symptoms; and to explain features that distinguish primary from secondary psychiatric conditions—the end result is more effective collaboration with pediatrics and emergency medicine in the care of patients with new psychiatric symptoms.
