Workshop 33 (ticket)
It's An Emergency! Developing a Psychiatric Emergency Service and Training Program within a Pediatric Emergency Department

The utilization of psychiatric emergency services has increased dramatically over the past several decades, with emergency departments becoming the major point of entry through which children and adolescents access mental healthcare. This trend has spawned the development of psychiatric emergency services. This Workshop reviews the history and presents different models of emergency pediatric psychiatric services. The unique benefits and challenges associated with providing psychiatric emergency services within a pediatric emergency department are discussed. Service differences in relationship to available healthcare resources are highlighted and the evolving role of the child and adolescent psychiatrist within these models is examined. Participants explore the application of these models within their current systems of care and training institutions in order to facilitate expanding the reach of the child and adolescent psychiatrist. Methods, including telepsychiatry, are illustrated.
