Workshop 14 (ticket)
Psychiatric Treatment of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Youth in North America

This Workshop expands the child and adolescent psychiatrist’s understanding of the mental health needs of deaf and hard of hearing youth; and provides practical guidelines on optimal service delivery to meet the unique needs of this population. Participants come to appreciate the challenges facing these patients, their families, and the community with regard to accessing appropriate mental health services. Participants develop a basic understanding of the deaf culture and the role of the Americans with Disabilities Act in the United States and the Duty to Accommodate in Canada. Interactive activities, such as practicing with video relay interpreting services, help develop confidence and practical skills that enhance psychiatric service delivery to deaf and hard of hearing youngsters. Discussion focuses on how best to coordinate services and develop evidence-based standards for treating this population in a culturally and linguistically appropriate manner.
