Master Clinician Paula D. Riggs, M.D.

Dr. Riggs is currently professor of Psychiatry in the Division of Substance Dependence at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr. Riggs is also the executive director of Encompass: Integrated Treatment for Adolescents and Young Adults: an evidence-based treatment for young people with co-occurring disorders, developed by her research team at the University of Colorado. She is nationally known for her innovative pharmacotherapy and behavioral treatment research in adolescents with co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorders (SUD) and has published numerous empirical studies and monographs on this topic. Previous National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) funded studies include a controlled trial of fluoxetine plus cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in depressed adolescent SUD; and a multi-site trial of psychostimulant medication plus CBT in adolescents with ADHD and SUD. She is currently conducting an NIDA-funded, controlled trial of bupropion plus CBT in adolescents with ADHD who have co-occurring cannabis and nicotine dependence. Dr. Riggs discusses her research and the importance of CBT in treatment, and highlights areas that need future research.
