Workshop 39 (ticket)
Integration of Mental and Physical Health Delivery in a Juvenile Hall Setting
Youth receiving coordinated health services while in juvenile detention have better outcomes than those who do not. This Workshop describes one program implemented in San Francisco, California, where youth are held accountable for their behavior and, at the same time, provides opportunities and assistance in developing new skills and competencies. Participants learn what medical and mental health components may be successfully integrated to provide services for detained youth; effective methods for developing an integrated health delivery system in a juvenile hall setting; and how coordination with child welfare agencies, along with psychotropic medication oversight, may be achieved. Challenges to creating an integrated system, funding issues, and successful outcomes are explored.
