This workshop provides an opportunity to learn ancient healing methods of the Ojibwe. An overview of Ojibwe life and culture on the Lac Courte Oreilles Reservation in Northern Wisconsin is presented and attendees are acquainted with skills from a culture that still practices ancient healing methods. Items used in teaching include stones, pelts, willow branches, birch bark, cotton string, cloth, yarn, hides, sinew, abalone shell, turtle shell, sage, tobacco, cedar, sweetgrass, bear root, and water. Increasing the therapeutic tools at the participant’s disposal may lead to greater understanding of the complexity of patients, more individualized treatment plans, and better outcomes. Child psychiatrists are encouraged to view their role not only as therapists but “elder” teachers to parents, children, and adolescents.
