Clinical Case Conference 9 (open)
Psychosis, the Qu'ran, and Resiliency: What's the Connection?
Cultural diversity presents a challenge to clinicians to stay culturally informed so they are fully equipped to treat patients of diverse cultural backgrounds. The presentation focuses on the case of a 16-year-old Pakistani female to illustrate how cultural and religious background can affect the initial presentation of mental illness, as well as the available treatment options. Misconceptions about the practices of Islam are dispelled; techniques for talking to children and their families about spirituality and religion are outlined; and ways to incorporate the consideration of the patient’s cultural background and religious practices into treatment are explored.
