Workshop 35 (ticket)
Somatic Symptom Disorders: An Update
Somatization disorders present frequent diagnostic and treatment challenges to child and adolescent psychiatrists. Somatization is universally used as a coping mechanism, but can become pathological if overused. This Workshop introduces the changing diagnostic criteria for the Somatic Symptom Disorders now evolving in the draft form of DSM-5 and the rationale for these proposed changes. Diagnostic considerations including the need to avoid overlooking underlying or coexisting organic illness are covered; the need to establish an effective rapport with the patient and family is emphasized; and treatment strategies are reviewed, including psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, behavior modification, family therapy, psychopharmacological agents, hypnosis, and physical therapy.
