Resources designed to assist in the incorporation of electronic medical records (EMRs) into clinical practice are described, including recommendations for the functional capabilities of a psychiatric EMR. The implementation of Meaningful Use Criteria relevant to child and adolescent psychiatry practice and meeting federal regulations are presented. Challenges presented by EMRs with regard to patient confidentiality, and the importance of electronic prescribing of controlled medication, are discussed.
