This Media Theater uses the documentary
Marathon Boy to stimulate discussion around issues of child abuse and protection, child competition, and social responsibility in a unique population of children. Participants learn the role of poverty and slum-dwelling on child development and child mental health; the risk and protective factors of involvement in youth athletics; the importance of structure, stability, and consistency in child development; the social services for children living in poverty; and the boundaries of competitive child activities.
