Clinical Case Conference 10 (open)
Cultural Identity Conflicts in Ethnically Diverse Adolescents
Identity formation is a key developmental task of adolescence, but this process can be difficult for youth from an ethnic minority. An increased awareness and understanding of cultural issues impacting adolescent identity development improves the quality of care offered to diverse youth, improves treatment adherence and progress, and alleviates disparities in mental health services. Attendees learn about identity development; how to identify their own cultural biases; the impact language, family structure, religion, societal, and familial expectations have on treatment; and how to engage adolescents around cultural identity issues.
