Clinical Case Conference 5 (open)
Catatonia in Autism Spectrum Disorders
Although catatonia develops in a small proportion of adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), it is important for clinicians to be aware of the possibility of catatonia when investigating deterioration in skills and behaviors in their patients. Examining cases from the Psychopharmacology Clinic at Cedars Sinai Medical Center sheds some light on the characteristics, presentation, diagnoses, and management of this dangerous complication of ASD. Attendees learn to recognize catatonia as a valid diagnosis in adolescents with ASD and to implement appropriate treatment strategies.
