Master Clinician James Leckman, M.D.: Building on Strengths and Keeping Development on Track in Evaluating and Treating Pediatric Onset Neuropsychiatric Disorders
James F. Leckman, M.D., is the Neison Harris Professor of Child Psychiatry, Psychiatry, Psychology, and Pediatrics at Yale University. Dr. Leckman is a well known child psychiatrist and patient-oriented clinical investigator. Since the mid-1990s his peers have regularly selected him as one of the “Best Doctors in America”. He has also been identified by American Society for Information, Science and Technology as a “Highly Cited Researcher” - one of the world's most cited authors in Psychology and Psychiatry – in the top half of the top one percent of all publishing researchers. Dr. Leckman is widely recognized as a committed clinician with special skills in the evaluation and treatment of Tourette’s Disorder and pediatric onset obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Since the early 1980s, he has seen and evaluated hundreds of individuals with these conditions. He and his research team are currently involved in a series of studies focused on tic disorders and early-onset OCD. These include cross-sectional and longitudinal studies that focus on neuropsychological performance and clinical outcomes, genetics, the role of environmental factors (such as psychosocial stress and preinatal risk factors), neurobiology (brain imaging and post-mortem studies), immunobiology, as well as studies evaluating novel cognitive-behavioral, pharmaceutical, and electrophysiological interventions. With his colleagues, he has also completed a number of influential meta-analyses of the existing scientific literature concerning the currently available interventions for Tourette’s and OCD. In this CCB, Dr. Leckman discusses his approaches to evaluation and treatment on these disorders.
