The Unified Protocol for the Treatment of Emotional Disorders in Adolescence: A Transdiagnostic Approach to Anxiety and Depression
Additional applicant information: A. Personal Statement. I have expertise in the development, adaptation and evaluation of cognitive-behavioral treatment (CBT) protocols for youth, with particular interest in transdiagnostic models that respond to the broader spectrums and high co-occurrence of emotional disorder symptoms. Over five years as a Research Assistant Professor and Associate Director of the Child and Adolescent Fear and Anxiety Treatment Program in the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders at Boston University from 2003-2008, I received extensive training in the development of cognitive-behavioral treatment protocols, their evaluation and implementation under the mentorship of Dr. David Barlow and colleagues. I recently completed a career development award (K23; MH073946) to evaluate a transdiagnostic CBT intervention approach for adolescents with any primary anxiety or depressive disorder (the Unified Protocol for the Treatment of Emotional Disorders in Adolescence [UP-A]; Ehrenreich-May et al., 2009) which emerged from these formative experiences. This main effects from this investigation are presently being summarized for publication. Additional evidence of my current expertise in treatment development and evaluation includes co-authorship of treatment manuals for adolescent panic disorder (Pincus, Ehrenreich & Mattis, 2008), and the adult Unified Protocol (Barlow et al., 2010), in addition to the UP-A manual and a concomitant Unified program for school-aged children, the Unified Protocol for Children: Emotion Detectives (UP-C; Ehrenreich-May & Bilek, 2009). A randomized, controlled trial of the UP-C, comparing its effects to a group CBT program targeting youth anxiety disorders is now underway at the University of Miami (UM).
Since launching the Child and Adolescent Mood and Anxiety Treatment (CAMAT) Program at UM in Fall 2008, where I am an Associate Professor in the Departments of Psychology and Psychiatry, my expertise has expanded to include the independent recruitment, assessment, supervision and retention of children with internalizing disorders and their families in clinical research. This research clinic setting has become a highly-sought local resource for the treatment of anxiety and depressive disorders in South Florida, screening over 400 families and enrolling over 150 in on-going clinical research trials. During this time, I have been a PI on a recently completed three-site collaborative R34 from NICHD (HD65284) to develop and evaluate the feasibility of a CBT protocol for younger adolescents with autism and anxiety disorders.

This research award aids in the support of an on-going randomized controlled trial comparing a transdiagnostic, cognitive behavioral treatment protocol (the Unified Protocol for Children: Emotion Detectives) to a “gold standard” CBT protocol for anxiety and depressive symptoms in children ages 7-12.

Novel Treatment Strategy in Adolescent Anxiety: Implications for Depression
The goal of this project is to investigate the effects of attention retraining in anxious adolescents undergoing cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). The dot-probe attention task will measure changes in attention biases to threat and reward. The neural circuitry following active vs. placebo attention retraining will also be investigated.

3/3 CBT for Anxiety Disorders in Autism: Adapting Treatment for Adolescents
This three-site collaborative project developed and tested the feasibility of a cognitive behavioral treatment for younger adolescents with an anxiety disorder and high-functioning autism spectrum disorder. Following initial protocol development, the resultant treatment was evaluated for preliminary efficacy in a controlled trial.

Computer-based Training in Panic Control Treatment for Adolescents
In this Phase 2 project, we developed an online training prototype for treatment providers working with adolescents diagnosed with panic disorder and evaluated it in a randomized, controlled trial comparing to alternate clinician training methods.
