Workshop 42 (ticket)
Juvenile Offenders: Legal Trends, the Los Angeles County Juvenile Mental Health Court, and the Prevention of Violence

Child psychiatrists are working in juvenile justice systems that ask them to actively participate in the treatment, assessment, policy making, and rehabilitation of juvenile offenders. They need to understand juvenile legal trends and how to perform evidence based assessments of juvenile offenders. Such assessments serve to identify risk factors that are often modifiable, allowing for opportunity to lower the risk of future violence. Participants learn how to conduct evidence based violence risk assessments and become familiar with state approaches to addressing parole for juvenile offenders and the use of mitigating factors in sentencing.
