Two Muslim Adolescents: The Impact of Culture and Religion in Diagnosis and Clinical Process

Religion and spirituality can impact on individual notions of mental health and physical illness. Participants in this CCC learn about the impact of cultural and religious influences on symptom presentation, how gender roles and explanatory models of illness are culturally influenced and framed to fit into the Cultural Formulation, about the benefits and drawbacks on treatment of disclosing ones own cultural or religious background, and challenges of bridging traditional and Western scientific treatment modalities. Cases of two adolescent Muslim patients, both first generation Americans, are presented. Participants gain knowledge of and insight on the recommendations of Culturally Competent Child Psychiatry Practice from AACAP Practice Parameters.
