Psychotherapy: Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Child and adolescent psychiatrists are integral in recognizing, referring, treating, and interacting with other professionals who provide services for children who have experienced trauma, at home or in the community. AACAP practice parameters recommend trauma-focused, evidence-based psychotherapy as the first line of treatment for children with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This Institute provides a unique opportunity for child and adolescent psychiatry residents and practitioners to receive one-day didactic and experiential training in the most scientifically tested and widely used trauma-focused psychotherapy: Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). Participants learn strategies for referring traumatized children to TF-CBT, are able to describe and recognize TF-CBT components, and are able to interface with other professionals who provide TF-CBT. This “101” level training allows child and adolescent psychiatrists to immediately apply TF-CBT knowledge and skills in their current practice settings, and lays the groundwork for subsequent requirements for those interested in TF-CBT certification.
