Clinical Case Conference 4 (open)
Ethics and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Training: The "Hidden" Curriculum

The American Council of Graduate Medical Education regulations explicitly stipulate the teaching of ethics in child and adolescent psychiatry (CAP) training programs to ensure learning about ethical dilemmas common to medical and CAP practice. This "overt" curriculum covers subjects that include confidentiality, civil commitment, informed assent/consent, and boundaries. By contrast, the "covert" or "hidden" ethics curriculum is rarely addressed by training programs. This CCC brings this issue to the forefront and discusses a variety of ethical considerations that underlie desirable resident and faculty conduct and their application during the course of CAP training. Participants become aware of factors contributing to an atmosphere that promotes learning and collegiality, and learn about ethics and educational resources that endorse and encourage the creation of openness between CAP faculty and residents. The case presentations are clearly intended to promote discussion among attendees. Residents benefit from the opportunity to openly discuss these issues, with CAP faculty.
