Somatic Symptom Disorders: Diagnostic and Treatment Updates

The recent DSM-5 delineated significant changes from the previous category of Somatoform Disorders to the newly formulated category of Somatic Symptom Disorders. This Workshop reviews current clinical perspectives on the transition of the diagnoses of somatoform disorders, factitious disorders, and malingering (DSM-IV-TR) to the relevant DSM-5 counterpart categories, together with the rationale for these changes. Currently available evidence-based strategies for treatment are discussed. A better understanding of the pathophysiology of these disorders and how to manage them improves clinician efficacy.
