The Assessment and Treatment of Preschool Children: Understanding the Essentials

Only ten percent of child and adolescent psychiatry training programs in the United States have clinics specifically dedicated to the evaluation of preschoolers, leaving many child and adolescent psychiatrists uncomfortable and unknowledgeable when assessing and treating young children. This Institute brings together national experts in the field of infant and preschool mental health who provide clinicians the tools necessary to navigate through the difficulties of early identification of common psychiatric disorders and recognizable symptoms in very young children; including trauma, anxiety, depression, feeding disorders, disruptive behavioral disorders, and autism spectrum disorders. Options for treatment are explored. Participants develop an understanding of both the evidence for and limitations of pharmacotherapy in treatment of preschoolers, and explore other evidence-based modalities, e.g., evidence-based psychosocial, psychotherapeutic and behavioral interventions.
