Practice in the World of Medication Oversight

Concerns over the increasing use of psychotropic medication in children and adolescents, the high cost of such medications, and concern over the appropriateness of using these medications and related safety issues have prompted the development of various types of prospective and retrospective review programs. In this Member Forum, presenters review recent trends in the use of psychotropic medication in children and adolescents; discuss the safety, clinical appropriateness, and cost concerns expressed by various stakeholders; describe the various strategies to monitor the appropriateness of the use of these medications and enhance their cost effectiveness; and discuss the impact of oversight and cost containment strategies on patients and clinicians.
