Workshop 41 (ticket)
Reaching the Unreachable Adolescent: Solution-Focused Brief Therapy Approaches in Adolescent Addiction

Solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) is a short-term, evidence-based treatment intervention that minimizes emphasis on past problems and failings, instead focusing on the adolescent’s preferred future, competencies, prior successes, and goals. Special emphasis is placed on how to use this approach to engage externally motivated adolescents in substance abuse treatment and their families. Participants learn how solution-building differs from problem solving, practical tools to engage with externally motivated adolescent’s that build on their strengths and resources, and how to use a system's perspective to enhance goal negotiation.
