Teaching Through a New Lens: Dead Poet's Society as a Model for Creative Innovation in Education
Core principles of Adult Learning Theory are that adults bring with them life experiences and that they are more oriented towards practical, tangible goals. This proven effective model of learning involves hands-on educational activities that challenge and stimulate in multiple ways, with an emphasis on teamwork and little to no traditional lecture; yet, the vast majority of education in the field of child and adolescent psychiatry continues to be in traditional lecture format. The film Dead Poet’s Society demonstrates how creative and non-traditional teaching methods can bring about extraordinary results. Discussion looks at the core principles of Adult Learning Theory and then utilizes them to generate creative, practical teaching strategies that can become educational initiatives in our institutions and practice settings.
