The Dark Matter of Love: A Documentary About a Family's Attempt to Cope With Adoption of Three Children From a Russian Orphanage

The 90-minute documentary, Dark Matter of Love, delves into the complexities of the attachment process after three children from a Russian orphanage are adopted into an intact American family. Attachment in children adopted from orphanages is greatly affected by the experiences, possible maltreatment, and emotional neglect that may have occurred while institutionalized. Discussion provides a comprehensive review of the different profiles of attachment and identifies the affective and behavioral aspects of secure, insecure, and disorganized attachment. Family based interventions and therapeutic techniques to help a child adapt and integrate into a new family system are presented.
