The Way He Looks: A Brazilian Film About Being Young, Gay, and Blind

Blind teenagers may be at increased risk for adverse consequences when they disclose that they are gay, e.g., isolation, bullying, suicidality, and violence. Cultural issues also may either help or hinder gay identification and positive psychosexual development in teenagers. The film The Way He Looks is about a Brazilian high school student who is blind and discovering that he is gay. The film shows how this teenager explores his friendships and sexuality. It is a sunny, delightful, moving film that offers a wonderful illustration of gay psychosexual development in a blind teen in a different culture. Participants discuss the need for improved care of and advocacy for both blind and sighted gay and lesbian patients. (In Portuguese with English subtitles.)
