Clinical Case Conference 3 (open)
Digital Melancholia: Adolescent Clinical Depression Complicated by Social Media

Depression in adolescents is a fairly common diagnosis, and there are many ways that media could be an influence. Social media has rapidly become integrated into the culture and for adolescents it serves as a primary means of communication and a way to express evolving identities. However, the provocative world of social media can also be a social, emotional, and legal minefield. This CCC concentrates on accurate diagnosis of depressive disorders in adolescents; analyzes the impact of social media on adolescent identity formation and relationships with peers, families, schools, and the juvenile justice system; assesses the potential causal, associative, mediating, and/or moderating effects of social media on adolescent depressive disorders; and looks at common social media pitfalls that are risk factors to the clinical care of adolescents with depressive disorders.
